This Playlist Will Ease You Into a New Drawing Hobby

Coloring and drawing have been shown to reduce stress and anxiety. Countless studies reveal that creating something new or learning a new skill strengthens the links between neurons in your brain, possibly protecting you from premature cognitive decline. The trick is letting go of self-judgment and concepts of beauty and realizing that drawing is a process - not a destination towards a final product. You don't necessarily have to master it, but find development in the learning process itself. We put together a playlist we hope will aid you in your new drawing journey.

New to drawing? Start here

This video will be your first stop on your new journey. It aims to help you meditate on why you want to take on drawing as a new hobby. It will guide you to let go of self-judgment and fear and approach your drawing journey with courage and curiosity. Revisit this video in times of self-doubt or loss of motivation.

Learn the basic equipment

Although the first video encourages you to take nothing with you but a pen and paper, we believe in letting you choose yourself. This video rounds up all the information about the basic tools and equipment you may want or need. It will go in-depth about the different qualities and grades of each material.

First drawing, step-by-step

Eager to begin? This video will be the perfect jump start. When you just bought your new sketchbook and don't know what to do with it, this video will show how easy it is to start drawing once you learn to see the shapes that make up everything in our world. It will show you step-by-step how to draw boats on a river.

Basic shading techniques

Now we're getting into the nitty gritty. This video will reveal the secrets of depth and lighting and will also be inspirational for those times when you don't know what to draw- a shaded sphere does the trick! Find out how to give an illusion of depth to a 2-dimensional sketch.

Introduction to perspective

This video tutorial is about another skill that will help you create the illusion of depth in your sketches and drawings. It is called perspective. The video will teach you the basic terms you need to know, as well as how they translate into practical techniques with the help of a ruler- no need for precise hand movements!

Continuous line drawing

Learning to draw or sketch from a reference or nature is not only about sketching techniques. It is also about learning to observe and perceive light, shade, and lines. This video will teach you a widely used skill that will help you strengthen the link between your perception and hand movements. We recommend doing it with a pen (not a ballpoint one).

Introduction to color theory

Getting bored of pencils and pens? Let's add some color to the picture. What color to choose? What goes well with what? How can you use color to reflect or evoke a mental state? How to put together a palette and mix your colors? This video is short but loaded with information and answers to all these questions.

Now that you know a little about color theory, let's put your knowledge to the test. This video will break down the common fears almost everyone has when first approaching watercolors. It is short and sweet, but it will give you everything you need to start confidently experimenting with watercolors on your own. Good luck!
