Alfred Sisley was a 19th-century British painter who spent most of his life in France, pouring the beautiful landscapes he saw onto canvases. Born in Paris to a wealthy British Family, Sisley's life was meant to take the business route, as his father's had. However, at age 22, after 4 years of studying business in London, he left his course and returned to Paris. The following year he enrolled at Ecole Des Beaux-Arts, one of the most influential art schools in France. It was here he would meet his friends and fellow impressionist painters Claude Monet, Frederic Bazille, and Pierre Auguste Renoir. Together, the 4 of them painted their way across the scenic spots of Paris, but their works were often rejected by galleries and exhibitions.
Though he lived comfortably initially on allowances from his father, after the family business crashed, Sisley spent most of his life in poverty, like many other artists in this era. He had a few loyal patrons and with their help, he and his wife survived the hard times. Though he never gained fame or fortune, many of his works are revered today and can be found in the Art Institute of Chicago, the Musee d'Orsay in Paris, and the Musee des Beaux-Arts in Nice. Sisley's work revolved around landscapes and cityscapes, with his heart and soul etched into the painted sky. In his 30 year career, this magnificent impressionist painter created over 900 stunning pieces, like these beauties listed below.
