Few poets have ever burned as brightly, or as briefly, as Lord Byron. Born in 1788, George Gordon Byron became the most famous writer of his age almost overnight, celebrated for sweeping works like Childe Harold's Pilgrimage and the witty, sprawling epic Don Juan. He was a leading light of the Romantic movement, a champion of nature, freedom, and feeling, and by any measure a genuine celebrity, adored and gossiped about in equal measure. One admirer famously called him "mad, bad, and dangerous to know," a description he did little to discourage.

His life was as dramatic as his verse. He traveled widely, kept company with fellow poets like Shelley, and died at just 36, having sailed to join the Greek struggle for independence, where he is honored as a hero to this day. He even left a remarkable footnote to history in his daughter, Ada Lovelace, now celebrated as a pioneer of computing. Two centuries on, Byron's words still shimmer with wit, passion, and wisdom. Here are some of his finest.

Attributed to Lord Byron
Vintage Byron mischief. With a wink, he warns that love striking in our later years can knock us off our feet all the harder, precisely because we imagine ourselves long past catching it.

From Childe Harold's Pilgrimage
Perhaps Byron's most beloved lines, and the very heart of the Romantic spirit. He is not turning his back on people, he tells us, but finding a deeper companionship in the wild and the sea.

From a letter to Annabella Milbanke, 1813
Written to the woman who would become his wife, this line captures Byron's restless hunger for a life fully felt. For him, to feel deeply, even to suffer, was far better than not to feel at all.

From Don Juan
A clever, coin-flipping observation on fate and free will. We fancy ourselves masters of our situation, Byron suggests, at the very moments our situation is quietly mastering us.

Recorded in Conversations of Lord Byron
A bittersweet reflection on the one-way street of the heart. It is an observation many will recognize from their own lives, delivered with Byron's characteristic certainty.

From Childe Harold's Pilgrimage
Byron describes losing himself in the grandeur of the natural world, so moved by mountains and sky that they become part of who he is. It is Romantic feeling at its purest.

From Don Juan
Coming from one of the most famous men of his day, this is a strikingly clear-eyed verdict on glory. For all his celebrity, Byron never quite trusted it, seeing fame as a fragile and fleeting thing.

Attributed to Lord Byron
A rare flash of plain, cheerful advice from a poet better known for brooding. Long before doctors spoke of the health benefits of laughter, Byron had its measure: a good laugh costs nothing and does us a world of good.

From Don Juan
One of Byron's warmest thoughts. Joy, he suggests, is not meant to be hoarded. It doubles the moment it is shared, arriving in the world already paired with another.

Attributed to Lord Byron
The pithy, often-quoted distillation of Byron's longer musing on the power of the written word. In a mere eight words, he captures how a single written thought can ripple out to move a multitude.

From his letters and journals
A lovely observation from a famously prolific letter-writer. In an age before telephones, Byron treasured the way a letter let him enjoy the company of a distant friend without ever leaving his desk. Anyone who still writes letters will know exactly what he means.

From Childe Harold's Pilgrimage
A tender, knowing question about the sorrows we carry. Byron does not pretend that pain leaves us untouched. He acknowledges, gently, that even healed wounds leave their quiet marks upon us.

From Childe Harold's Pilgrimage
A grand, sweeping reflection. For all the endless books and passing centuries, Byron suggests, the human story keeps returning to the same few themes of rise and fall, love and loss, told over and over again.
