1. A First Day Like No Other
3 Heroic News Stories That Will Inspire You

Saving the lives of swimmers in distress might seem like another typical day at work for professional lifeguards. However, this American teenager probably wasn't expecting to get in on so much action within only minutes of starting his summer job.

15-year-old Jack Viglianco's began his first-ever shift as a lifeguard at Ohio's Charles A. Foster pool when after only 20 minutes he heard a cry for help. As it turned out, a 4-year-old boy had mistakenly swum into the pool's deep end, after which he began to struggle to keep his head above the water.

Luckily for the child, Jack seemed destined to become a hero and immediately sprung into action, diving into the deep end, and getting the child back to safety. Needless to say, saving a human life is not something that is ever taken lightly. “I was realizing that I just saved a kid’s life,” Jack told WJW. “And that is something not many other people can say. Nothing my friends have ever said.”

According to the staff at the pool, lifeguards are the backbone of the facility. During the summer of 2016 alone, there were more than 42 incidents of people getting into difficulty in the water. Thankfully, due to the bravery and tireless diligence of the lifeguards on duty, all of them were saved.

2. Compassion Comes in All Shapes and Sizes
3 Heroic News Stories That Will Inspire You

Whoever said there are only bad people in jail is sorely mistaken, as these six inmates from Georgia's Polk County Jail have proved. While they were working outdoors on a particularly humid day, the correctional officer in charge of them ended up collapsing and losing consciousness. However, the way in which they reacted is far from how many people would have expected them to act.

At that point, stealing the officer's gun and driving off in his van would have been like taking candy from a baby. Instead, they dashed over to the unconscious body, only to find out that the officer had stopped breathing. They quickly removed his bulletproof vest and gun belt and began to perform CPR. At the same time, one of the inmates used the officer's cell phone to call for help.

When medical help arrived, they found that the officer was breathing once again, and so they took him to the hospital to properly recover. As a reward, the officer's family bought the inmates a delicious meal (with dessert included), and Polk County Sheriff even promised to reduce their jail sentences by around 25%.

However, when questioned about their act of kindness, the inmates simply said that they believed that this was the right thing to do. “When that happened, in my opinion, it wasn’t about who is in jail and who wasn’t,” Greg Williams told WXIA-TV News. “It was about a man going down and we had to help him.”

3. All You Need Is Pizza!
3 Heroic News Stories That Will Inspire You

When trying to recover an abducted child, what's the most important piece of equipment? Apparently, it's a nice warm pizza!

When a UK man, called Virgil, lost custody of his 4-year-old daughter during a legal battle, he decided to immediately disappear, taking her with him. Police started investigating immediately but were struggling to find Virgil's whereabouts. That's why they turned to 21-year-old Harry Brown, one of Virgil's Facebook friends, for help.

Harry and Virgil had met online sometime earlier and had chatted on the internet in the past. The police said that they reached out to Brown simply because he was one of just three persons who had 'liked' one of the abductor's most recent profile pictures.

Brown agreed to help the police with their investigations and started chatting with Virgil online in order to find out exactly where he was hiding. After some time, Virgil claimed that he was staying in a motel in Arizona with his daughter and girlfriend.

While it was a good start, it wasn't quite enough information, so Brown decided to ask Virgil if he would accept a free pizza delivery to their motel. Foolishly, Virgil accepted this offer with glee and provided Brown with the motel's address and even his exact room number. Needless to say, the only thing that made its way to the motel was a van full of cops!
