Aspartame Has Been Linked to Various Cancers

Aspartame (Aspartame) is a sweetener that has been present for decades in diet drinks, chewing gum, dairy desserts and countless products that promise us a sweet taste without sugar. But behind that tempting advantage lies a question that has occupied researchers around the world: could regular consumption of the sweetener harm our health, and might it even be linked to certain types of cancer? Several studies have found troubling associations, while others failed to confirm them, so there is still no conclusive proof that aspartame causes cancer. That said, its 2023 classification as "possibly carcinogenic to humans" reminds us that this is not a matter to be brushed aside, and a comprehensive analysis of studies published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition certainly justifies that approach. So what was discovered, how worried should the findings make us, and is it time to rethink that daily can of diet soda?

How was the study conducted?

The researchers who carried out the analysis mentioned above examined data drawn from the large Nurses' Health Study, which has tracked the health of hundreds of thousands of nurses over the years, beginning in 1976, as well as a follow-up study known as the HPFSconducted among a similar number of men starting in 1986. In total, data from more than 125,000 women and men were analyzed, all of whom reported over the years on their health, lifestyle and dietary habits. The lengthy follow-up allowed the researchers to examine not only what participants drank at a single point in time, but how their habits changed and what happened to their health over more than two decades. Even so, it is important to remember that this was an observational study. It can reveal interesting and worrying associations, but it cannot prove with certainty that a particular beverage caused a disease.

What did the researchers find?

The findings drew attention because they pointed to a possible link between daily consumption of diet drinks and certain blood diseases. Across all participants, even a single drink a day was associated with a higher relative risk of leukemia. Among men alone, an association was also found with an increased risk of multiple myeloma and non-Hodgkin lymphoma. However, the results did not repeat themselves in the same way among women, and some of the associations were statistically borderline. Even so, these findings certainly raised concern and justified the additional studies presented below.

The figures that emerged from the study were:

  • A 42% higher relative risk of leukemia among women and men combined.
  • A 102% higher relative risk of multiple myeloma among men.
  • A 31% higher relative risk of non-Hodgkin lymphoma among men.
The researchers were unable to explain why some of the associations appeared specifically among men. The possibility that the findings were influenced by other lifestyle habits, by pre-existing health conditions, or even by chance was not ruled out, so they should be treated as a warning sign rather than a final verdict.

Concern surrounding aspartame did not begin with studies on humans. Studies in rats had already produced findings that raised questions about prolonged exposure to the sweetener. In one of the largest studies of its kind, conducted in 2006, rats that received aspartame for most of their lives showed a reported increase in several types of tumors, including lymphomas and leukemias. Another study, in which exposure began during pregnancy and continued throughout the animals' lives, also found an increase in several types of tumors.

These findings sound alarming, but they are not without problems. Various health bodies and researchers have pointed to limitations in the design of the experiments, difficulties in interpreting the results, and the possibility that other diseases influenced the diagnoses. These studies should therefore not be ignored, but neither should they be presented as proof that aspartame necessarily causes cancer in humans.

Further studies on the link between aspartame consumption and increased cancer risk

In recent years, several large studies have revived concern about a possible link between aspartame consumption and various types of cancer. A large American study published in 2026 that followed some 100,000 adults found that aspartame consumption was associated with a moderate increase in overall cancer risk, and in particular in cancers linked to obesity and the digestive system. The French NutriNet-Santé study from 2022, which included more than 102,000 participants, found a link between higher aspartame consumption and an increased risk of breast cancer and several obesity-related cancers. In addition, a comprehensive 2023 assessment by the International Agency for Research on Cancer pointed to evidence of a possible link between aspartame and hepatocellular carcinoma, the most common type of liver cancer.

As noted, it was in light of these and other findings that aspartame was classified as "possibly carcinogenic to humans", even though the classification does not determine that consuming it necessarily causes disease. It is important to remember that all the human studies were observational, so they can point to a statistical association but cannot prove that the sweetener itself caused the cancer. Even so, the accumulation of several warning signs justifies moderate consumption and continued research, rather than treating aspartame as an ingredient that can be consumed without limit.

Which products contain aspartame?

Aspartame is not found only in diet drinks. It may appear in a variety of products labeled "sugar-free", "diet" or "reduced calorie", though it is important to know that not every such product necessarily contains it. Many manufacturers now use other sweeteners as well, so the surest way to identify it is to check the ingredient list and look for the name "aspartame" or the designation E951.

  • Diet soft drinks
  • Sugar-free gum and candies
  • Reduced-sugar yogurts, dairy desserts and puddings
  • Diet ice creams and popsicles
  • Powdered drink mixes
  • Certain protein bars and sports products
  • Tabletop sweeteners
  • Chewable medications, lozenges and certain dietary supplements

Can aspartame cause side effects and other dangers?

Over the years there have been a number of isolated reports of people experiencing headaches, dizziness, nausea and other symptoms that appeared, according to them, after consuming aspartame. These reports should not be dismissed automatically, but neither do they prove that the sweetener was the cause. In controlled studies the results were inconsistent, and in many cases no significant difference was found between people who received aspartame and those who received a placebo. Claims that aspartame worsens multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, epilepsy, diabetes, depression or brain tumors are likewise not supported by well-established medical evidence today. That said, anyone who notices that a headache, nausea or some other symptom recurs again and again after consuming a particular product should stop using it and see whether there is any improvement. In the case of significant or persistent symptoms, it is advisable to seek medical advice.

In summary

The studies conducted to date do not prove that aspartame causes cancer, but neither have they entirely closed the debate over its safety. Its classification as "possibly carcinogenic to humans" is based on limited evidence, so there is no need to panic over every stick of gum or diet drink, but there is certainly room for moderation. High daily consumption of sweet, processed products, whether they contain sugar or artificial sweeteners, is not a habit worth cultivating over time.
 
The most cautious and practical way forward is to check labels, gradually cut back on sweetened drinks, and accustom the palate to less sweet flavors. That way you can reduce your exposure to aspartame and similar sweeteners, without switching to sugar-laden drinks and without being drawn into frightening conclusions that current medical research does not fully support.
