The Meanings of Common Dream Symbols

Dreams are like messages from the unconscious mind. If only they were written in the same language that we use in waking reality. Fortunately, we do actually have the ability to study our dreams and interpret the common dream symbols that they contain.

Although they aren’t always universal definitions, the following dream meanings offer a solid starting point to helping you understand your own personal dream meanings.

1. Animals
Dream Symbol Meanings

Often represent the part of your psyche that feels connected to nature and survival. Being chased by some sort of predator suggests that you’re holding back repressed emotions such as aggression or fear.

2. Babies

They symbolize a literal desire to produce offspring, or your own vulnerability or need to feel loved. They can also signify a new start.

3. Being Chased

This is one of the most common dream symbols in all cultures. It means that you feel threatened, so reflect on who’s chasing you and why they’re a threat in real life.

4. Exams
Dream Symbol Meanings

These can signify self-evaluation, with the content of the exam reflecting the part of your personality or life under inspection.

5. Death

The death of a friend or loved one represents change and is not a psychic prediction of any kind. If you’re recently bereaved, it might be an attempt to come to terms with your loss.

6. Falling

This is a very common dream symbol that relates to our anxieties about letting go, losing control, or somehow failing after a success.

7. Food
Dream Symbol Meanings

This is said to symbolize knowledge because it nourishes the body just as information nourishes the mind.

8. Demons

These are sneaky evil entities that signify repressed emotions. You might secretly feel the need to change your behavior for the better.

9. Hands

These are always present in dreams, but when they are tied up it might represent feelings of futility. Washing your hands might express guilt.

10. Killing
Dream Symbol Meanings

Killing someone in a dream doesn’t make you a closet murderer; it represents your desire to kill part of your own personality. It might also symbolize hostility towards a particular person.

11. Missing a Flight

This is another common dream and it reveals frustration over missing important opportunities in life.  It’s most common when you’re struggling to make a big decision.

12. Money

This can symbolize self-worth. If you dream of exchanging money, it might show that you’re anticipating some changes in your life.

13. Mountains
Dream Symbol Meanings

These are obstacles, so dreaming of successfully climbing a mountain can reveal a true feeling of achievement. Viewing a landscape from the top of a mountain can symbolize a life under review without conscious prejudice.

14. Roads

Aside from being literal manifestations, they also convey your direction in life. This might be the time to question your current path in life.

15. Teeth

These are common dream symbols. Dreaming of losing your teeth may mark a fear of getting old and becoming unattractive.

16. Being Trapped
Dream Symbol Meanings

This is a common nightmare theme, reflecting your real-life inability to escape or make the right choices.

17. Vehicles

Might reflect how much control you feel you have over your life – for example, is the car out of control, or is someone else driving it for you?

18. Water

This comes in many forms, symbolizing the unconscious mind. Calm pools of water reflect inner peace, while choppy oceans can suggest unease.
