I was strolling through the local supermarket the other day when I saw an elderly gentleman shopping with his 2-year-old grandson.
When they were out of view, I could hear a deafening wailing every time they passed candy or toys. I felt so sorry for the old man having to deal with the boy’s tantrums.
But to my astonishment, I heard him speaking coolly and calmly to the troublesome brat: "Jimmy, relax, it won't take long."
The screaming still didn’t stop, so he continued: "Jimmy, there's no reason to get angry, try to enjoy this walk and in a minute we'll be on the way home, I promise."
Anyway, after I came out of the store I saw them in the parking lot. Inspired by the old man’s fortitude I actually went over to congratulate him for his patience.
"Sir," I said, "I have to say you are an amazing grandfather. The way you talk to the boy and keep your calm despite all of his screaming... Jimmy's a lucky kid to have a grandpa like you."
"I appreciate that," said the grandfather.
"But I'm Jimmy. This little devil’s name is Mickey."
