1910 and 20s: Modified Model-T Ford Roadster
This Model-T roadster was converted into an RV back in 1915. It has a "telescope apartment" at the rear, with a built-in bed. This arrangement provided a convenient place to sleep for a driver on a long journey.
1930s and 40s: Airstream trailer
The very first Airstream trailer was completed in 1929. Early models included amenities like small stoves and ice boxes, and were the first-ever self-contained trailers designed to go on long road trips.
1950s: Shasta trailer
Shaped like canned hams, these Shasta trailers became popular in the 1950s, taking the earlier Airstream concept and shrinking it in size. They provided a cheap and easy way of vacationing following WWII.
1960s: Winnebago
Although they existed as early as 1958, Winnebagos really took off after they began to be mass-produced in 1967. Mass production dropped their purchase price dramatically, and people bought them in droves.
1970s: Dodge Travco
The next step in the evolution of RVs was the Dodge Travco, which took away many of traditional RV inconveniences. For instance, it had a toilet that could incinerate its own waste.
1970s: Volkswagen Westfalia Camper (VW Bus)
One of the most iconic RVs in history isn't technically a motorhome. Nevertheless, a VW Bus' shape and interior make it an ideal place to sleep and perfect for conversions into motorhomes, as many people in fact did.
1980s: Fleetwood Bounder
Long before it was brought back into the spotlight in the hit TV series, Breaking Bad, this RV was hugely popular with families that enjoyed them on cross-country road trips.
1990s and 2000s: Coachmen Leprechaun
This RV is renowned for its excellent use of space - an extra bedroom bunk can be created at the front. Its design laid the foundation for what became the shape of most new RVs sold today.
2010s: Renovated camper vans
During the 2010s, people have begun to take notice of RVs from the past once again. Many of them set about renovating them, and now enjoy life on the road full-time.
2010s: March Mobile eleMMent Palazzo Superior
At the other end of the spectrum to a renovated RV, this $3 million, alien-looking motorhome is the world's most expensive. In fact, it's described by its manufacturer as a "mobile mansion."
