Do you recall back in the 70's seeing this "land-yacht" driving around a boulevard and thinking to yourself how you envy those lucky folks? We know the answer may not be a unanimous "yes," as this personal luxury car was as controversial at the time as it is today. Everyone had an opinion since this car stood out from the crowd, even though it was manufactured and marketed for 3 years only. That being said, it was the best-selling generation of the Mark series. Let's have a look at these memorable cars.
This giant is 4.5 feet tall and 19 feet long. It weighs more than 2 tons. Some consider it to be a pinnacle of American luxury cars, and some would say it is over-hyped. But it certainly left a mark. For example, Ford was the first to re-introduce into the automobile world the opera windows. Those are the small windows in the backseat that give a touch of vintage luxurious style. The entire automobile industry followed.
So to keep on standing out from the crowd, Ford launched the designer series, inviting high fashion houses to pick colors and feature their names on the car, like in the photo below showcasing the Givenchy edition. The entire line of Mark V has prominent design features that will ensure you recognize this land-yacht from miles away: the waterfall grill, massive hood, turbine wheels, and the overall swift look. Another styling staple is the carriage roof that in appearance (but not in function) mimics a convertible.
As for the interior of the car, it stood out among its contesters on the market for one outstanding feature: its impeccable sound insulation! The nautical theme of the design features thickly padded seats and huge doors for easy access to the backseat (it is a coupe, after all). Personal pampers for the driver only include an analog clock, an 8-track player, and cruise control. Ford thought the whole luxury experience through, even the alarm of the "no-seatbelt" sign chimes ever-so-gently. But here is a funny fact for you: the steering wheel is exactly the same as a Ford pickup truck!
