The Facts Behind These Rare Pics Are Truly Fascinating

No matter how much information we consume, there are always things about our amazing world that can leave you completely surprised. It can be some incredible historical story, some unknown facts about the natural world or even some unbelievable thing you had never seen or known about before.

1. The Chinese village of Houtouwan has been uninhabited for over 30 years and is now being reclaimed by nature.

2. This is the Bagworm Moth. This hardworking moth builds a shelter out of sticks and carries it on its back.

3. An extraordinarily rare photograph of the Sphinx in the late 1800s when it was still covered by sand. The shot was taken from a hot air balloon.

4. These two incredible photos show how the Lockheed Aircraft plant in Burbank, California, was put under camouflage during World War II, hidden entirely below a complete blanket of cover. To give it the appearance of a suburban area, hundreds of fake shrubs and trees were placed around it.

5. This is a photo of an iceberg with black and red paint in the Atlantic ocean. It was taken by the chief steward of the ocean liner Prinz Adalbert on the morning of April 15, 1912, hours after the RMS Titanic sank. It is widely believed that this was the very iceberg that hit the Titanic and it was also cited in various historical accounts.

6. A room in a hotel that is likely to have been abandoned for several years.

7. A soldier "turtle" ant with a giant rounded head. They use their heads to block off the entrances of their nests and hence act as living doors. Interestingly, not all heads of these ants are shaped alike.

8. A rare and majestic photo of the Balkan Lynx. It is found in eastern Albania and western North Macedonia and is one of the rarest cats on earth.

9. On the left is the tooth of a Megalodon, an extinct species of shark that lived roughly 20 million years ago. On the right is the tooth of a Great white shark, one of the largest sharks of the world today.

12. This is how being inside a glacier in Iceland would feel like.

13. An amazingly well-preserved Pyramidion, the uppermost piece, or capstone of an Egyptian pyramid. This particular capstone is believed to be of the first pyramid of the 12th Dynasty king Amenemhat III. The artifact’s origin is from Dahshur, an ancient pyramid site just south of Ṣaqqārah, northern Egypt. Circa 1850-1800 BC.

14. A close up look of the intricate craftsmanship on the ‘Hercules’ armor of the Emperor Maximilian II of Austria. The armor was made in 1555 and is now on display at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna.
