Wildlife photography requires extraordinary patience, skill, and more than a little luck. The Nature inFocus Photography competition celebrates these rare moments when everything aligns perfectly. This year's contest drew an astounding 14,180 entries from photographers across 42 countries, each hoping to capture nature's untold stories.

Since its inception in Bangalore back in 2014, Nature InFocus has grown into a thriving community of wildlife enthusiasts, photographers, and conservationists. The 2024 competition winners were announced on February 12th this year, chosen across multiple categories including Animal Behaviour, Creative Nature Photography, and Conservation Focus. Below are some of the most remarkable shots from this year’s competition.

1. A curious damselfly peeks through a perfectly circular hole in an emerald leaf. These delicate insects spend most of their lives near water bodies, darting through vegetation in search of smaller prey.

2. The legendary tigress Kuwani, now 14 years old, lunges at an unsuspecting wild boar in the Kolsa forest in Maharashtra, India. Despite her age, she remains one of the most skilled hunters in Tadoba's territory.

3. The leopardess Kazuri pauses momentarily during her afternoon hunt. The smoky backdrop of the Masai Mara savanna creates a dramatic silhouette of this skilled predator.

4. A Steller's sea eagle balances precariously on floating ice in Japan's Nemuro Strait. These magnificent birds risk deadly consequences if their feathers become waterlogged during winter hunting.

5. A water buffalo emerges from its cooling swim adorned with floating aquatic plants. These massive creatures often spend hours submerged to escape Sri Lanka's intense heat.

6. A killer whale charges through a school of mobula rays in the waters of Baja California. These smaller cousins of manta rays often gather in large groups, creating spectacular feeding opportunities for predators.

7. Morning mist creates an ethereal atmosphere as cranes gather at their favorite pool in northern Poland. The photographer spent weeks studying their behavior, approaching only under cover of darkness.

8. Red-crowned cranes move with balletic grace through the morning fog in Hokkaido. These culturally significant birds are considered sacred in Japanese folklore.

9. A school of hardyhead silversides performs an intricate dance of survival as blacktip reef sharks patrol the edges. Each synchronized movement of the fish creates mesmerizing patterns in the clear Maldivian waters.

10. A tiger beetle larva waits motionlessly in its burrow. These skilled ambush predators use hooks on their backs to anchor themselves before striking at passing prey.

11. A sea turtle makes a meal of a translucent jellyfish in the azure waters off Thailand's coast. The turtle's sharp beak easily manages the jellyfish's trailing tentacles.

12. A male Spectacled Bear named Tony finds shelter in an ancient fig tree during an Andean rainstorm. The Spanish moss-draped branches provide a perfect resting spot for these remarkable climbing bears.

13. A mother leopard demonstrates the art of tree climbing to her attentive cub near Mysore, India. These big cats often use trees for safety and as vantage points while hunting.

14. A wasp spider secures its captured prey in an expertly woven web. These spiders are known for creating distinctive zigzag patterns in their webs to attract insects.

15. Two spiny-tailed lizards lock in combat on Rajasthan's sun-baked earth. These remarkable reptiles can survive in some of India's most extreme desert conditions.

16. A snow leopard takes a brief rest after an unsuccessful hunt along the Indus River. These elusive cats rarely reveal themselves, making this November 2021 sighting particularly special.
