How to Reduce Facial Puffiness in the Morning

Have you woken up in the morning after a night of sleep, went to look at yourself in the mirror and discovered to your astonishment that your face is swollen? This is a common and disturbing phenomenon, but don't worry, in most cases, it is not something serious, but a specific problem that can be easily solved with a few very simple steps. Get to know the 6 most effective ways we were able to find to treat a swollen face, the ones that will allow you to wake up in the morning and not only feel fresh - but also look that way for a long time!

1. Take 3 minutes to massage your neck and chest

The first step that will help you reduce the swelling in your face a little is to make sure that your body has regular and good blood circulation - and one of the ways to do this is by a special massage that stimulates blood flow and then the plasma-like liquid that passes through your lymphatic system. Do it according to the following steps:

A. Cross your hands in an X shape (as in the picture below) and place both fingers (the index finger and the forearm) on the top of the neck on either side.
B. Start massaging these points from bottom to top 10 times in a circular motion.
C. Move your fingers to the center of the neck (under the chin) and massage the area from bottom to top 10 times.
D. Now move your fingers to the center of the chest and massage it 10 times from side to side across it (i.e. from the center of the chest to the sides of the body)

2. Maintain a balanced intake of potassium and sodium

Our kidneys always strive for balance - they consistently and meticulously ensure that the concentrations of sodium, potassium and water in our body remain at a healthy level. Therefore, when we break the balance and consume too much sodium, then our body naturally tries to store as much water as possible to bridge the gaps. As a result, different areas of our body may get a "bloated" appearance due to the high concentrations of water. Therefore, every time we finish a meal high in sodium, it is recommended to eat foods rich in potassium - such as our favorite food, banana.

3. Do not wash your face with hot water

If you have facial swelling, it is important to know that taking hot showers may be the cause. According to experts, hot water can increase blood flow to the face, leading to the accumulation of high levels of blood that cause puffiness. To reduce this swelling, experts suggest limiting the use of hot water on the face and washing it with cold water instead, preferably in the bathroom sink. However, if you cannot avoid hot water in the shower, you can mitigate its effects by rinsing your face with cold water.

4. Maintain a consistent intake of protein.

Another reason that causes your face to be swollen and is also related to diet, is a lack of protein consumption. When your body feels that your daily menu does not contain sufficient amounts of protein, a "leakage" of blood occurs from your blood vessels into the cells, which is sometimes expressed in swelling in different areas of the body, including the face. Therefore, it is advisable to take care of the combination of a sufficient amount of protein in your daily menu.

5. Avoid sleeping with makeup on

Did you come back from a night out or a family event late at night? Before you go to sleep, you better spend at least a few minutes washing your face and removing the rest of the makeup from your eyes, lips and cheeks. The ingredients in the makeup can create an inflammatory reaction if they stay too long on the facial skin, which can contribute to their puffy appearance. Therefore, if you want to wake up fresh and radiant in the morning, it is better to make sure to remove any makeup and similar substances before going to bed.

It is important to note that products containing vitamin K can be a useful solution for reducing puffiness. When applied to the skin, vitamin K can effectively treat it by reducing redness and minimizing the appearance of puffiness. Therefore, it is recommended to check the ingredients of the products before buying them.
