It was called the Salt March because of a new British tax on salt. During the march, thousands of Indians followed Gandhi from his religious retreat near Ahmedabad to the Arabian Sea coast, a distance of some 240 miles, from March to April. Nearly 60 thousand people were imprisoned, including Gandhi.
