May 8th is world donkey day, but there are some places around the world where donkeys are celebrated every day of the year. Rachele Totaro works for Il Rifugio degli Asinelli, an Italian Donkey Sanctuary, in Sala Biellese in Northern Italy, which works Worldwide to protect donkeys and to help people to understand how gorgeous these often misunderstood animals are.
There are 135 donkeys and mules at the sanctuary, most of them having been saved from a life of mistreatment and neglect. The volunteers at this sanctuary help to heal their bodies and souls so that the young and healthy ones can find a new home (always in pairs because donkeys have strong bonds and are often friends for life), while the older ones have a safe place to spend the rest of their lives.
As soon as Rachele has some spare time, she goes outside with her camera and takes pictures of these beautiful animals that she can share with everyone. Donkeys are clever, playful, curious, friendly, sometimes naughty, and unique. Take a look below at some of the gorgeous donkeys living at Il Rifugio, we’re sure you’ll fall in love with them!
