1. Read the labels

By law it is required that all products contain a list of ingredients. But how often do you look at them? Before applying these products to your skin, understand what you are using. Be on the look out, especially, for ingredients like parabens, which have been linked to breast cancer or formaldehyde, which can trigger allergic reactions. This is what you need to know:

2. Stock up on supplements

Over-the-counter medications cause side effects. For instance, medications like ibuprofen may cause symptoms such as upset stomach, heartburn, diarrhea and high blood pressure. While you should always check any illness with your doctor, you may want to swap your conventional drugs for natural alternatives like supplements or essential oils. But be sure to bear in mind these tips:

3. Dispose responsibly

How we dispose of our medication is often overlooked. In fact, it is a bad idea to flush unused or expired medication down the toilet because they can contaminate the water supply. According to a study conducted in 2013, published in Environmental Pollution, 50 water treatment plants across the United States found that more than half tested positive for at least 25 drugs, including anti-depressants, NSAIDS and medications for high blood pressure. So, what should you do? Crush up unused medications and mix them with coffee grounds or cat litter before throwing them in the trash in a sealed container.
