Using Essential Oils throughout Your Home

From de-stressing to treating skin problems to creating a pleasant atmosphere, essential oils have been used for hundreds of years in various roles, and have helped people all over the world. Besides the health benefits of these wonderful oils, they can also help create a wonderful atmosphere in a home making it more pleasant than ever.

In order to use these oils to create a relaxing atmosphere and make your home smell wonderful, you should know which ones are suitable for which rooms so that each one can become warmer and more inviting than ever before.

How to use them:

To enjoy the aromas of essential oils throughout your home, use them in one of the following ways:

• Place a few drops on dry leaves (potpourri) and place a bowl of them in a central place in the room.
• Place several drops in a diffuser so that the smell can be spread throughout the room.

1. The Foyer / Hallway

The foyer or hallway is the first space we and our guests see, so it's important that it is inviting. The use of essential oils that relax and those that have a pleasant fragrance, like cinnamon or orange oil, will allow you and your guests to enter a fragrant home that will bring a smile to your faces. Orange oil has an ingredient called "Limonene" that reduces anxiety, lowers heart rate and relieves stress. Cinnamon reminds us of holiday baking, so you can’t go wrong with either one.

2. The Living Room

We tend to spend the majority of our time at home in the living room, so a pleasant atmosphere is super important. Maat van Uitert, an expert on essential oils, recommends that you choose the fragrances based on what you use this room for. If for example, you use this room to relax from stressful days, pine oil would be the best choice. If you work or do various activities in the living room, it's recommended that you use rosemary oil as it helps stimulate creativity and strengthens memory.

3. The Kitchen

In the kitchen, Maat strongly recommends using lemon essential oil. The fresh and natural scent of lemon stimulates the senses and helps maintain a pleasant atmosphere. Moreover, the oil of this citrus fruit is anti-bacterial. Another oil that suits the room where baking takes place is cinnamon. This oil causes most people to smile when they smell it because of the soothing sensations it provokes.

4. The Dining Room

If you have a dining room or dining area where you usually eat, you can make it a very pleasant family meeting place using essential oils. For festive dinners, or if you just want a sniff of nature while eating, it’s recommended to use bergamot essential oil - a special strain of orange with an amazing aroma and the ability to stimulate appetite. In addition to bergamot, Maat recommends the use of copaiba oil (oil produced from South American wood bark) with a refined and refreshing fragrance that creates a relaxing atmosphere and fits the dining room perfectly.

5. The Laundry room

There is nothing like the smell of laundry that has just come out of the dryer filling the room with the scent of softener. You don’t have to do laundry all the time to keep this room smelling good, rather mix together or diffuse separately, lemon and copaiba essential oils. The refreshing aromas of these two oils provide a calming feeling that might make you WANT to do laundry. Beyond dispersing or placing essential oils in the laundry room, you can use a few drops of the oils mentioned in your fabric softener.

6. The Bathroom

Refreshing showers and long baths are among the most relaxing rituals we all do on a regular basis, and with essential oils, you can make the bathroom even more soothing. If you prefer light aromas, choose lemon or eucalyptus oil to make you feel that you are bathing in nature, and if you prefer sweeter aromas - lavender is the oil for you. The linalool found in this beloved oil goes directly to our brains and makes us relax in a wonderful and natural way at the most pleasant time of the day. You can spread the lavender throughout the bathroom or put a few drops of it in your bath water.

7. The Bedroom

We spend a lot of time in our bedroom (assuming we get the recommended hours of sleep), so it’s important for this room to be relaxing. To make it such, Maat recommends using jasmine scents. The rich flowery scent of jasmine stimulates feelings of intimacy and closeness - exactly what we want in our bedroom and it also lets you relax after long, busy days.
You don’t need to use a lot of jasmine oil because it has a strong fragrance, and it's recommended to use it mostly at night. In the mornings, on the other hand, Maat recommends opening the day with frankincense oil placed next to you on your nightstand. This unique oil will make you feel balanced and grounded - allowing you to start the day well.
