Before Going to Sleep With Jewelry, Read This

There are jewelry pieces that are taken off the moment you get home, and there are those that have almost become part of our body. A necklace with a sentimental pendant, earrings that haven’t left the ears for years, rings from a special day or any other jewelry that we leave on “just for a moment” because often end up going to sleep with it. It’s not always something worth doing, because during sleep, when the body is relaxed and we are unaware of our movements, quite a few things happen that can affect the skin, sleep quality, and the jewelry pieces themselves. So is it really necessary to remove them all before going to bed? We checked what sleep experts and jewelers say, and here’s what you should know.

What happens to the body during sleep and why does it matter?

Even if it seems to you that you sleep without moving, most people turn over dozens of times during the night. The neck and head move, the cheeks rub against the pillow and the skin is in prolonged contact with fabric, hair and sometimes also light sweat. During these hours there is continuous friction and pinpoint pressure on small areas of the body, especially the ears and neck. Jewelry on these areas experiences exactly the same load for 6–8 hours..

Sleeping with jewelry and the effect on the skin

Our skin does not react well to the combination of friction, moisture and metal. Jewelry that contains certain metals, such as nickel, may trigger an allergic reaction in sensitive people, manifested as redness, itching or mild peeling. Even without an allergy, prolonged pressure on a small point on the skin can cause local irritation or small pimples. Anyone who suffers from sensitive skin, acne in the neck area or recurring irritations in the earlobes, would be better off adopting a simple habit: remove jewelry before sleep. In addition, periodic cleaning of chains and earrings with water and mild soap, and thorough drying, can significantly reduce the accumulation of bacteria and dirt that cause infection.

Sleeping with jewelry and the effect on hair and bedding

Jewelry that is not removed before sleep does not only affect the skin. Chains and earrings can get tangled in the ends of the hair, especially if it is long or curly. The result: small knots, unpleasant pulling and sometimes even hair breakage. At the same time, sometimes the bedding also pays a price. Large hoops or prominent pendants can create tiny tears in the pillow fabric and the continuous friction also wears down the jewelry itself. If you invested in an expensive or sentimental piece, it’s worth remembering that it too deserves “rest” at night and if you have delicate bedding, it’s important to protect it.

Wearing a necklace at night - comfort vs. risk

A thin and close-fitting necklace may seem harmless at first glance, but during sleep it can get tangled in hair, stretch when turning over or get pressed between the neck and pillow. In very rare cases, particularly delicate chains can tear or get caught. Beyond that, a sharp or heavy pendant can create a pressure point on the skin and as a result cause injury or damage to the jewelry. There is also a hygienic aspect: the neck area sweats lightly during the night and under a large pendant or thick chain moisture can accumulate that increases skin irritation, especially for those prone to sensitivities. In addition, soft gold or thin chain links wear out faster when subjected to prolonged friction and pressure.

Is it a dramatic danger? Usually not, but removing the necklace before sleep will reduce unnecessary strain on the skin and extend the life of the jewelry. If you choose to sleep with a necklace anyway, it is preferable to choose a short and simple chain, without a prominent pendant, and to clean it regularly.

Wearing earrings during sleep - it depends on the type

When it comes to earrings, the difference between the types is significant and greatly affects how harmful it can be if they are not removed before sleep:

Stud earrings are usually less likely to get caught in pillow fabric and are therefore considered more comfortable for sleeping. However, even they can press on the earlobe and cause discomfort, especially for side sleepers.

Dangling earrings or large hoops can get caught in fabric, stretch and even cause sudden pain if you turn quickly. In some cases a partial tear in the earlobe can occur – an unpleasant scenario to say the least!

Clip-on earrings work with mechanical pressure. At night this pressure can become a real nuisance, especially if sleeping on your side. Beyond discomfort, the prolonged pressure can cause local pain and even temporary redness, so it is not recommended to sleep with them at all.

Huggie earrings are earrings that wrap around the earlobe or cartilage and close relatively tightly. On one hand they are less prominent than dangling earrings, and therefore less likely to get caught in the pillow. On the other hand, if they are thick or rigid, they can press on the ear for hours and cause local sensitivity. If you do sleep with earrings, this type is considered relatively safe, as long as they are smooth and close-fitting.

Screw-back earrings are very common and usually small diamond studs. The advantage: they are very stable and less likely to fall out. The disadvantage: their back part protrudes and is sometimes relatively sharp. When sleeping on your side, the back can press into the skin and create a “sore spot” feeling in the morning. It’s not necessarily dangerous, but it’s unpleasant and this is not the type of earring you want to go to bed with.

Bottom line: In most situations, removing earrings before sleep will relieve the earlobes and reduce unnecessary wear and strain.

So what is really recommended?

The clearest and simplest recommendation is to remove jewelry before sleep. It’s an action of a few seconds that can save discomfort or even pain, and unnecessary wear. If you still go to sleep with earrings or a necklace, it is advisable to choose close-fitting, smooth items and not sharp or heavy jewelry. It is also important to maintain periodic cleaning and pay attention to any sign of irritation, pain or redness on the skin.

In summary: A little awareness, without drama

Jewelry is part of the identity and personal story for many of us, but they too deserve rest. Sometimes a small action before sleep can protect both the skin, the jewelry and the quality of your sleep. The question is not whether it’s allowed, but whether it’s really worth it for you in the long run. Sometimes a simple action before getting into bed – placing the necklace in its box and removing the earrings – can improve the feeling in the morning and preserve what is truly precious to you.
