1. Not knowing the difference between deodorant and antiperspirant
This is a factor most people don't consider. But did you know that antiperspirants reduce sweat while deodorants reduce the stink? Most antiperspirants contain aluminum salts which are sometimes mixed with zirconium salts, binding to a protein in the sweat gland ducts, creating a sweat duct plug that temporarily tamps down sweat production. On the other hand, deodorants are topical products that will either neutralize odor-using ingredients that kill some of the bacteria that contribute to body-odor or simply masks it. But they will not reduce the amount of sweat and will not keep your armpits dry.
2. Applying it to wet skin
For best results, apply antiperspirants to dry skin. This means that if you are already sweaty, or if you have just stepped out of the shower, your antiperspirant will not be as effective.
3. Applying it right after shaving
It is important to take care when applying deodorant or antiperspirant immediately after shaving, especially in products that contain high alcohol contents. Doing so may cause irritation.
4. Layering deodorant
Layering is something that is normally done with dry shampoo or when applying mascara, but adding a fresh layer of deodorant won't keep you fresh from yesterday's odor. The product should be applied to clean, dry skin so that it may adhere directly to the surface. Layering deodorant on top of an older product, especially a thick cream or solid, is likely to be less effective.
5. Applying it in the morning
For best results, deodorant should be applied in the evening, before bed. Deodorants and antiperspirants are most effective on the skin when sweat ducts are less active, and there is minimal moisture - which is why in the evening, while you sleep is the best time to apply deodorant. As you get the best results on clean, dry skin, it is, therefore, best to shower in the evening, patting your skin dry with a towel, then applying the deodorant. If you prefer the fresh scent of deodorant in the morning, then it's okay to apply again, though this is simply for your own comfort.
6. Not applying it every day
This can have a different effect on people. Depending on your body and the type of deodorant or antiperspirant you are using, you may not need to apply it every single day. Some antiperspirants, for instance, can last up to 48 hours, meaning that daily application is not required.

7. Forgetting to moisturize
To help minimize irritation, apply a dimethicone-based moisturizer. You may also use coconut oil as a natural alternative which soothes dry skin and reduces water loss in very dry skin. Coconut oil has natural antibacterial properties that are incredibly soothing to the skin in those delicate places.
8. Using the wrong product
You should also take into consideration your skin type and be aware of any skin issues or sensitivities when choosing a deodorant. Higher alcohol content formulas like sprays and gels may be irritating to sensitive skin types. It is essential that you take care of the skin under your arms as you would the skin on your face. Opt for an antiperspirant that will give you a 48-hour odor and wetness protection. And one that is also formulated with moisturizers for softer, smoother skin.
9. Not knowing the difference between regular and clinical strength
Regular antiperspirants should show a 20% sweat duct plug formation, while clinical strength must show a 30% reduction as they contain a higher concentration of aluminum zirconium salts. Yet while they may be more effective, they can also be more irritating. For this reason, patients with sensitive skin should avoid antiperspirants with fragrance as well as extra strength formulas, and opt for products that contain dimethicone which prevents irritation in susceptible individuals.
10. Not considering natural formulas
If you suffer from light sweating, or just need to camouflage and prevent mild odor, opt for a natural deodorant instead.
