These Inventions Will Change Lives in Extraordinary Ways

The primary driving force behind many new creations is some sort of need. After all, they do say that necessity is the mother of invention. All the time, people are coming up with brilliant inventions that answer different human needs - such as clean water, sanitation, or an environmental necessity. Gifted designers have identified these important issues, brainstormed innovative solutions, and then created some truly inspirational and wonderful inventions. Below you can find 10 such inventions.

1. The Straw That Filters Water

Inventions - Humanitarian
The LifeStraw filters out virtually all microbiological contaminants in water to make it safe to drink. The invention was designed to give people in developing countries quick access to safe drinking water.

2. A Patch That Makes You Invisible to Mosquitoes

This patch, known as the Kite Patch, keeps mosquitoes away for up to 48 hours, by blocking their ability to detect the carbon dioxide we emit when we breathe. This small sticker-like patch attaches to clothing, and helps to stop the spread of deadly diseases such as malaria, West Nile Virus, and Dengue Fever.

3. The Flatpack Refugee Shelter

Developed by the IKEA Foundation and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, the Better Shelter is a flatpack that combines form, function, and sustainability. Unlike the commonly-used tents, these shelters can last up to three years and come equipped with solar panels, lights, mosquito nets, ventilation, and a lockable door for safety and privacy.

4. The Drinkable Book

Inventions - Humanitarian

This book is absolute genius: along with providing information on clean water, each page is coated with silver nanoparticles, which kill 99.9% of bacteria when water passes through. This gives the user safe, clean drinking water. Once a page has been torn out, it can be used multiple times as a filter, providing around 30 days of clean water for one person.

5. The Kit That Makes Menstruation Safer

Flo is an easy-to-use, cost-effective kit for cleaning and storing reusable sanitary pads. The aim is to improve hygiene in the parts of the world where menstruation is stigmatized and pads and tampons are not readily available. This brilliant invention consists of just a simple spinning and cleaning gadget, a mini-clothes line, and a pouch for easy transport.

6. The Floating Rubbish Bin That cleans the Oceans

Seabin is an automatic marina rubbish bin that collects floating debris and oil 24/7. This terrific invention will hopefully help solve and prevent ocean pollution, with the aim of eventually replacing the "trash boats" that currently serve in marinas all over the world.

7. The Edible Water Bottle

Inventions - Humanitarian

Ooho! is a new kind of packaging that is made from seaweed - a great alternative to plastic bottles. The H20 orbs are servings of water that are encased in an algae-based gel, which in due time could become a replacement for the bottles that we use on a daily basis.

8. The Dining Set for Dementia Patients

Eatwell is an 8-piece dining set that fosters mealtime independence for those suffering from dementia. The bottom of the bowls are slanted for easy scooping, and bright blue interiors help the users to easily identify food. The spoons hug the side of the dinnerware, making collecting food a lot easier and preventing spillage. Furthermore, all handles allow for easy gripping and stability.

9. The Soccer Ball That Generates Electricity

Inventions - Humanitarian
SOCCKET is a portable, power-generating soccer ball that has been designed to promote physical activity as well as spread awareness regarding the global energy issue. This invention gets charged during gameplay so that it can power up its energy-efficient, 3-LED lamp. Even better: for every ball bought, SOCCKET gives one ball to a child in a developing country.

10. The App that Lets You Lend Your Eyes to the Blind

Be My Eyes is a mobile app that connects the blind to sighted volunteers who want to help out via a direct video connection. Blind people get help navigating the world around them, sighted people get to help those in need, and technology is used for a positive purpose.
