Welcome to the fantastic animal world created solely out of paper. These paper masterpieces are created by Canadian artist Calvin Nicholls. Here you will find sculptures of feathered and furry animals that are so detailed and vivid that you can almost see them leap or fly out of the frame. Admire the incredible craftsmanship and talent of this skilled artist in the 12 images below.
As you can see, Nicholls recreates each detail of an animal’s body, be it the plumage of a graceful bird or the muscular frame of a tiger with incredible precision. The Canadian artist creates pieces that range from small artworks that measure only a few inches across to human-sized pieces, and everything in-between.
Needless to say, the size and complexity of each piece will predetermine the amount of time it takes to finish it. The artist revealed to This Is Colossal, “The largest sculptures I’ve done require several hundreds of hours while the more modest pieces keep me busy for two or more weeks. Familiarity with the subject is a big factor as well. My love of birds often propels me through pieces much faster than when sculpting subjects with (an) emphasis on musculature and structure.”
With more than 40 years of experience behind his back, it’s no surprise that Nicholls’ animal world includes an immense variety of animals - from lions and giraffes to tiny birds like doves.
