In the pantheon of great painters in history, the name of John Singer Sargent (1856 – 1925) is always spoken with the utmost respect. The distinguished painter was one of the last great Realist artists of his time and was celebrated for his distinctive portraitures. This is how he managed to leave a lasting impression in the world of art with his lovely watercolor works.
Born in Florence, Italy, both of Sargent’s parents came from artistic backgrounds and so they recognized and nurtured their son’s talents from the very beginning. Not long after, he started his formal training and it didn’t take much time for his talents to be noticed by the world. Today, we will celebrate John Singer Sargent by taking a look at some of his most amazing watercolor paintings.
Initially, Sargent worked as a portrait artist for eminent rulers and the upper class in Europe and the United States of America. In the 1890s and early 1900s, his reputation as a portraitist had reached across the world and the artist painted many of the illustrious personalities of the time such as actress Dame Ellen Terry, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Lady Randolph Churchill, and John D. Rockefeller Sr.
By 1910 Sargent had abandoned portraiture as he was bored with the genre and continued working on his murals and watercolor paintings. While his portraits featured dark and grand backgrounds, his watercolor paintings had a much-relaxed tone and were filled with vivid strokes. Images of the different colors of Venice often featured prominently in his paintings along with landscapes, and structures, as well as murals in the classical style.
