Broccoli and Cheddar Stromboli

The stromboli is a well-known Italian dish that migrated and settled in the United States. It can be described as a mix between a toast and a pizza of sorts, and it comes with all kinds of fillings. This time we chose a vegetarian filling but the cheese makes it a true delight.

Ingredients for pastry:
Olive oil - as needed
Onions - 1/2 (chopped)
Garlic - 2 cloves (minced)
Broccoli - 2 heads (cut into florets)
Salt and Pepper - as needed
Basil leaves - 1/2 cup (chopped)
All-Purpose flour - for dusting the surface
Pizza dough - 1 ls (thawed to room temp.)
Cheddar cheese - 3 cups (grated)
Pasta sauce - 1 (24-oz) jar
Method of preparing the pastry:
  1. Preheat oven to 400°F. Line a baking sheet and grease it with olive oil.
  2. Sauté the onion in a greased pan over medium-high heat. After 3 minutes add the garlic.
  3. After a minute add the broccoli with 1/2 cup water, salt and pepper. Cover and cook for 5 minutes.
  4. Remove the lid for another 2 minutes and then remove from heat. Transfer everything to abowl, add the basil.
  5. Flour a surface and roll out the dough. Make it about 10-by-13 inches. Sprinkle half the cheese in the middle of the dough, leaving an inch border.
  6. Over the cheese, layer the broccoli mix and then the remaining cheese. Fold the borders in and then roll the dough to create a flat cylinder.
  7. Tighten and place on the prepared baking dish. Brush with olive oil, make 5 airing slits and bake 25-30 minutes.
  8. Serve with the pasta sauce.
Chef's Tip:
For flavor, you can swap half the cheddar with a different cheese, such as parmesan.
