Ever since safe-deposit boxes were introduced in the mid-1800s, they were considered the most secure place to stash your valuables. Although most banks don’t have giant steel-vault doors with two-key systems in this day and age, safe-deposit boxes are still relevant, especially when it comes to keeping important items safe at home.
Even if you don’t have wads of cash or jewelry lying around, everyone has valuables that need to be protected against theft and natural disasters like fires, floods, and hurricanes. A home safe offers a convenient and accessible solution. These are the items that should be locked up for safekeeping, for your peace of mind.

Tax records should be kept for up to six years in case they are audited. According to the advice given by Trina Patel, a financial advice manager to Reader’s Digest, they’re also critical when you’re applying for a mortgage or car loan. To make things easy on yourself, it is best to keep tax returns, investment information, W-2 and 1099 forms, receipts, and any other supporting documentation handy and organized. Experts like Patel stress the importance of not only keeping these files neatly together but also away from prying eyes, preferably in a safe.

Not only are laptops expensive, but they also store personal and valuable information. From passwords to work-related documents and personal photos, this is not material you want to fall into the wrong hands. If you share a living or working space and sometimes leave your laptop unattended, it's better to be safe than sorry and keep your laptop secured.

We’ve already established that a lot of important personal and professional information is stored on your laptop. However, in case of a theft, flood, or any other occurrence that might damage your computer, it’s extremely important to have backups on an external hard drive, thumb drive, or even a CD/DVD. This electronic form of your records is just as valuable as hard copies, and it is highly recommended to keep these stored in a safe.

Let’s admit it, you’d be heartbroken if anything happened to your collection of stamps to baseball cards or the old coin collection your grandfather left you. Regardless of their worth in money, collectibles usually hold sentimental value as well. So to prevent any damage like moisture and tarnishes, you’d do well to keep your collection in a humidity-controlled safe. If your collection contains items that could actually be pricey, like antiques, it’ll also make it tough for thieves to walk away with it.

Another pricey bit of equipment, which also happens to hold personal photos of friends and family is a camera. If you happen to be an enthusiastic photographer who owns a more valuable model, then this section holds even more relevance for you. Because a camera is something you usually take with you when on the road, a small portable safe is the best way to go. Of course, it will also be useful for other belongings you want to protect, such as your phone, watch, and the like.

You might not want your housemates, family, or children to find your medication, for either safety or privacy reasons. Locking them up in a safe can be a good solution; that way you also protect your medication from damage and help you always know where you left it.

Keys are small yet important items that tend to get lost at the time you need them most. Maybe you want to hide a key to your front door somewhere outside so you never find yourself stuck. Well, a creative solution to the safety issues this would create is leaving the key in a tiny safe. There are various safes that are deliberately designed for this purpose, and take on the shapes of unsuspicious items like rocks, and even canned vegetables, if you need a diversion for indoor use.
