The ocean is a vast expanse of life, beauty, and mystery, with very few in this world having strayed to its darkest depths. It is a world of its own, teeming with the tiniest life-forms and the largest ones spread far and wide across the great blueness. Christian Vizl has had a fascination for the ocean since he was a child, and in his 30-year career, has spent much of his time documenting the fearful and fearsome creatures of the sea, in their natural state. This award-winning photographer shares his friends of the ocean with us in the book “The Silent Kingdom”, with text provided by renowned oceanographer Dr. Sylvia A. Earle.
A native of Mexico City, Christian Vizl spent much of his time by the water, observing and capturing its inhabitants on camera. He continues to use his art to raise awareness for the protection of specified marine areas, having seen numerous marine habitats sustain damage. Combining his love of monochromatic photography with his love of the sea, he was inspired to create this collection of black-and-white photographs of beautiful ocean dwellers. Here are 20 pictures from Vizl’s series that will take your breath away.
