Edward Hopper was born in 1882 in New York City, and grew up in a home of dominating women, from his grandmother to his sister. His love of art began at the ripe young age of ten when Hopper first picked up a pencil and began drawing geometric shapes and household objects like cups and vases. His parents were notably supportive of his pursuit of art, and when he was 13 years old, he completed his first signed oil painting.
Throughout his school life, he continued to paint, draw, and sketch many different forms, mostly enjoying creating comics that featured women dominating men, a true example of art imitating life. That would come to be a recurring theme for Hopper, who, in his 60-year career, created hundreds of pieces, displaying real everyday scenes in urban and rural life. Hopper had a way of bringing out the color and humanity in even the simplest lovely moments, best seen in his most famous piece, Nighthawks. To really appreciate the contribution of Edward Hopper to the world of Realist art, take a look at these 20 gorgeous paintings.
