At an age where attacks came only from the ground, the moat was a necessary barrier to prevent the enemy from penetrating the castle. This is why many castles were built up towering hills. However, with no natural barrier, the obvious solution was to build an artificial barrier - and thus was born the moat. The most ancient canal was discovered in Israel, in the old city of Jericho, and is thousands of years old. Naturally, most of the moats around castles no longer used, but there are still some castles which have preserved the full canal water for aesthetic purposes, and indeed, is an impressive sight! |
