As the last Veyron – number 450 – was completed in the summer of 2014, Bugatti was secretly preparing its replacement. Some 18 months later, the Chiron burst onto the international motoring scene in a launch at Switzerland’s prestigious Geneva Motor Show.
The collection of numbers contained in this car are nothing short of mind-blowing – its 8.0-liter, quad-turbocharged, W16 engine produces 1,500hp, which is about 10 times the amount that the engine in a regular family car produces. In fact, it’s the most powerful production car the world has ever seen.
It can reach 62mph in 2.5 seconds, 125mph in 6.5 and 185mph in 13.5. Furthermore, it will keep on accelerating to a top speed that will be capped at 260mph. However, a de-restricted model will undoubtedly be able to go even faster than that. It makes you wonder how much faster a street-legal car can actually go.
President of Bugatti Automobiles, Wolfgang Dürheimer, said: “It’s part of human natures to cross boundaries and set new records. This striving is also our driving force at Bugatti. The Chiron is the result of our efforts to make the best even better.”
Just 500 Chirons will be made, and no less than a third of them were already sold before the car was even unveiled. If you’re wondering how much a Chiron will set you back, its base price is an eye-watering $2.6 million.
It goes without saying that this car is already well on its way to becoming a legend in its own right, just like the Veyron that came before it.
