A good pair of glasses can keep your eyes healthier, prevent headaches and generally make life easier. Here are 12 essential tips to keep your glasses scratch-free and in good condition for a long time.

1. Always use both hands when taking them off or putting them on. While it doesn’t look as suave as taking them off with one hand, it will keep the frame from bending and losing its shape.

2. Avoid cleaners with Ammonia or Alcohol. Your lenses have a special coating and the harsh chemicals can damage it. It is better to use a solution of water and diluted soap instead. To dry the lenses, only use a microfiber cloth specifically designed for that purpose as other types can scratch the lenses.

3. At the beach? Don’t be tempted to clean sand off your glasses in the water. The salt in the water will damage your lenses and speed up the corrosion on the joints. Instead - use bottled water to rinse them.

4. Don’t leave your glasses in very hot places (like your car) – The frames are made by pouring hot melted plastic into a mould & the heat can melt the plastic frames and bend them out of shape or ruin them completely.

5. Avoid putting them on your head – the hair contains natural oils that stain the lenses and the angle causes the frame to stretch. Instead either put them down (preferably in a case), or hang them off of your shirt.
6. Stop your glasses from slipping off your nose: Use Wedgees or Nerdwax to keep them where they need to be. "Wedgees" are these small foamy bits you put on the edge of the glasses to make the sit more snugly. "Nerdwax" is a special wax you apply directly to the nose-guard to prevent them from slipping. Remember - glasses that slip can fall and break…

7. Never leave your glasses with the lens-side down – they WILL get scratched. Consider getting a hard case for them.

8. Keep a small repair kit handy: Loose screws are a common issue with glasses. Invest in a small eyeglass repair kit, which typically includes a tiny screwdriver, replacement screws, and sometimes nose pads. Keep one at home and consider a travel-sized version for your bag or car. If you notice a loose screw, tighten it immediately to prevent it from falling out and potentially losing your lens.
9. Understand your lens coatings: Different lens coatings require different care. Anti-reflective coatings reduce glare but can show smudges more easily, requiring more frequent cleaning. Scratch-resistant coatings offer some protection but aren't scratch-proof, so still handle with care. UV protection coatings are embedded in the lens and don't require special care. Always ask your optician about the best way to care for your specific lens coatings.
10. Be cautious during water activities: If you're swimming or engaging in water sports, consider using a strap to secure your glasses or invest in prescription goggles. Regular glasses can easily slip off in water, potentially leading to loss or damage. Plus, the chlorine in pools or salt in seawater can harm your lenses and frame over time. If you must wear your glasses near water, be extra vigilant and keep them in a waterproof case when not in use.
11. Know when it's time for a replacement: Even with excellent care, glasses don't last forever. It's time to consider a replacement if you notice:
12. Ensure a proper fit: Properly fitting glasses should sit comfortably on your nose without sliding down, and the temples (arms) should rest gently against the side of your head without pressing too hard. The frames shouldn't be so wide that they extend past the sides of your face, nor so narrow that they pinch. If you find yourself constantly pushing your glasses up or if they leave marks on your nose or behind your ears, it's time for an adjustment. A good fit not only ensures comfort but also helps maintain the shape of your frames and reduces the risk of damage from frequent handling.
