World War I was a war that was filled with plenty of horror stories, yet sometimes it takes the greatest darkness to allow the light to shine even brighter. This is certainly true for Anna Coleman Watts Ladd, who was an American sculptor who founded the 'Studio For Portrait Masks', where she made face masks for soldiers who had been facially disfigured during the war.
Such victims were known as 'the most tragic of all war's victims' since despite fighting for their country, they were doomed to a life of loneliness and isolation because of the highly visible nature of their injuries. Thanks to her greatly charitable work, she was made a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor by the French Government in 1932.
