Frederick Childe Hassam, better known in the art world as Childe Hassam, was an artist born in Boston in 1859 whose works had a profound effect on impressionism. Though he showed an interest in the arts as a child, he also enjoyed boxing and swimming. When he was older, he gave up the opportunity to study further, choosing to work and support his family after a fire destroyed his father’s business instead. It was at this time that he discovered the art of wood engraving and sought employment with a prestigious engraver.
Over the next 2 years, he developed his passion for illustrating and painting, with a preference for watercolors. In the earlier phases of his artistic career, his specialty was illustrating children’s stories for various magazines and publications. Despite having little formal art education, his love for painting was strong. He traveled across Europe with a fellow artist, studying the Old Masters up close, and painting along the way. He created over 3,000 paintings, illustrations, and sketches over his 30-year-long career before his passing in 1935.
