If you've ever felt guilty about eating the same lunch three days in a row, science might actually be on your side. A new study suggests that sticking to repeat "go-to" meals — rather than constantly switching things up — could be a surprisingly effective strategy for losing weight. And the findings are worth a closer look.
What the Research Found
The study analyzed detailed food logs from 112 adults with overweight or obesity who were enrolled in a structured, 12-week behavioral weight loss program. Participants tracked everything they ate using a mobile app and weighed themselves daily on a wireless scale. Researchers then measured two key factors: how much each person's daily calorie intake fluctuated, and how often they ate the same meals and snacks over time.
The results were eye-opening. People who repeated the same foods regularly — rather than eating a wide variety — lost an average of 5.9% of their body weight. Those with a more varied diet lost about 4.3%. That's a meaningful difference, especially for people who've been struggling to see results.
The Role of Caloric Consistency
It wasn't just about eating familiar foods. The study also found that keeping calorie intake steady from day to day made a real difference. For every 100-calorie increase in daily fluctuation, weight loss dropped by roughly 0.6% over the course of the program. In other words, the more predictable your eating, the better your results tended to be.
This makes intuitive sense. When you're not making new food decisions every day, there's less room for impulsive choices, portion creep, or calorie underestimation. Routine creates a kind of built-in guardrail.
Why Simplicity Works
Most people already eat a relatively limited range of foods — experts estimate the average person cycles through about 20 to 30 foods on a regular basis. The study suggests that leaning into this natural tendency, rather than fighting it, can actually support healthier habits.
When your meals are predictable, you're less likely to be caught off guard by hunger or make last-minute decisions that lead to less healthy choices. You know what you're eating, you know how much, and over time that consistency becomes second nature.
A Few Important Caveats
The study doesn't prove that eating the same meals causes weight loss — it shows a correlation. Other factors, like personal motivation or self-discipline, may also play a role in the results. Additionally, the data relied on self-reported food logs and took place in a structured program environment, which doesn't always reflect real-world conditions.
Experts also point out that consistency only helps if the foods themselves are nutritious. Repeating meals that are low in key nutrients won't do you any favors, no matter how reliably you eat them. And for people with busy, unpredictable schedules — travel, stress, family demands — maintaining that level of routine isn't always easy without some planning and support.
How to Put This Into Practice
The good news is that you don't need to eat the exact same thing every day forever. The takeaway is more about building a reliable rotation of meals you enjoy and that fit your health goals. Here are a few ways to get started:
