Since 1967, the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) has been held every year, showcasing new & upcoming technologies designed for the consumer market. Many technologies we know and use today were first introduced in CES, and while appearing there doesn't mean that the technology will become widespread, a-lot of the gadgets we use made their debut in one of the booths. Quite notable were the VCRs, Camcorders, Compact Discs, DVDs, as well as HDTVs, 3D TVs, Blu-Ray and more. In this year (2014), the Korean LG Corporation introduced complete prototypes of 2 very unique screens, based on OLED (Organic Light-Emitting Diode) with very unique characteristics: |
The first is a transparent, 18 inch touchscreen which can be incorporated in various scenarios as a sales-booster. Transparent OLEDs have only transparent components and, when turned off, are up to 85 percent as transparent as their components. When a transparent OLED display is turned on, it allows light to pass in both directions. |
Here is how LG demonstrated the technology in its booth: |
An example of one of the many uses of transparent screens is for added value and information to increase product purchases, as can be seen in the video below (and yes, this is real!) : |
The second unique screen was a flexible display that you can bend and roll freely... Foldable OLEDs have are made of very flexible metallic foils or plastics. They are very lightweight and durable. Their use in devices such as cell phones and PDAs can reduce breakage, a major cause for return or repair. |
The technology behind this display already exists in the LG FLEX smartphone, and here's a demonstrations of both its durability, screen quality and size: |
And if you were wondering, the size of the first flexible TV will be 100 inches and it is planned for 2017. Want to see more futuristic technology? Check THIS out. |
