Steven Kovacs lives just off the shore of Palm Beach. He is a self-taught photographer who combined his passion for diving with his photography skills to bring us unique portraits of just-hatched fish. In their larvae state, these fish are not strong enough yet to swim against the current, leaving them in a state of billowing and floating around the pitch-black depths found close to the bottom of the ocean.
Kovacs has been photographing fish in Florida, Hawaii, and the Philippines. His portraits bring about an interesting contrast between the flatness of the static background and the dynamic, vivid colors of his subjects. While these larval fish are not yet strong enough to swim and navigate the waters, their anatomy makes them natural dancers.
