Deep in the Ullensvang Municipality, of Vestland county in Norway lies a massive rock formation, that over the last 10 years has become one of the most popular hiking destinations in the world. The peak of this rock stands at around 3,600 feet above sea level with a cliff that juts out horizontally from the mountain, reminiscent of Pride Rock in the classic Disney animated tale The Lion King. Unlike Pride Rock, Trolltunga (The Troll’s Tongue) overlooks the powerful lake of Ringedalsvatnet, the main source of electricity for the nearby industrial town of Odda, along with numerous mountains.
The now popular hiking trail to Trolltunga begins from the village of Skjeggedal, which offers parking and lodging for travelers. The trail to the top of the peak from the village stretches across 17 miles. For more experienced hikers, alternative starting points are available to the peak. From the top of this rock, the surrounding lakes, rivers, villages, and mountains seem so close, you’ll feel like you can reach out and touch them.
