The Nikon Small World Photomicrography Competition has been giving us glimpses of the microscopic world around us for the past 48 years. Every year, the prestigious photography contest reveals some incredible things that can only be seen under a microscope. This year was no different.

A close-up of the embryonic hand of a Madagascar giant day gecko won the first prize this year. Other notable winning images include a nightmarish shot of an ant’s face and an incredible photograph of a fly under the chin of a tiger beetle. Check out some of 2022's best microscopic photos from the contest below.
