Homes on Lake Erie Covered in Thick Ice

A year ago, people's homes in the Hoover Beach neighborhood near Lake Erie, New York, were covered in a 1-3'' thick layer of ice. This happened overnight due to gale-force winds,15-foot waves from the lake, and freezing temperatures. This bizarre phenomenon happened because the lake wasn't frozen yet, but the temperatures were below freezing, and so, the winds accelerated the freezing of the waves. What will this year bring to Lake Erie?

How would you get out?
