Flamingos can be seen all over the world. From the Caribbean and South America, to Africa, the Middle East and Europe.
The word 'flamingo' comes from the Spanish or Latin word, 'flamenco' which means fire. The word refers to its bright feathers.
They are strong swimmers, though they rarely ever do swim, and are also powerful fliers. Though most of the time, you'll likely see them wading.
When they fly in a flock, a flamingo can reach a top speed of 35 miles per hour.
Chicks are actually born gray or white. It takes them up to three years to reach their mature pink, orange or red plumage.
The pink, orange or red hue of a flamingo's feathers is caused by carotenoid pigments in their food.
Their diet typically includes shrimp, plankton, algae and crustaceans skimmed from different water sources. If those food sources do no not provide enough pigmentation, flamingos may remain gray or white - but they are still healthy and strong.
Their legs can be 30 to 50 inches long - longer than their entire body.
The backward bending of what most assume is their knee, is actually their ankle.
The most prominent threats to flamingos include predators, habitat loss and illegal poaching for their feathers.
