On This Day
On March 9th, 1993, Rodney King testified in front of a Grand Jury in the retrial of four Los Angeles Police Department officers who had previously been acquitted of charges of assault and using excessive force. In 1991, the officers in question had been caught on camera severely beating Mr. King with batons after they pulled him over following a high-speed chase. Their acquittal at their trial in 1992 sparked the six-day-long Los Angeles riots, which left 55 people dead and caused $1 billion in damage.
