Johannes Vermeer was a Dutch painter who lived in the 1600s and specialized in provincial genre art, which depicts everyday scenes in life. Much like his fellow painter Rembrandt, he never traveled abroad despite being an avid art collector and dealer. Like many other Golden Age Dutch Painters, Johannes Vermeer devoted his life to the creation, collection and admiration of art. He was renowned for his masterful use and treatment of light in his paintings, but nonetheless maintained only modest celebrity during his lifetime, and remained an obscure artist even after his passing. It was only in the 19th century that his work began to gain immense fame, starting with his most famous fainting, The Girl With A Pearl Earring. These are the many other works of this esteemed artist from the 17th century.
