Choose the Right Type of Sunscreen for Your Skin

Everyone's skin is different, and each of us needs different cosmetic and care products. Among them, there is one that everyone uses – men, women, children, and adults – and that is sunscreen. In our scorching summer, it’s important to apply sunscreen every time you go out in the sun, but you can’t just blindly choose a sunscreen and hope it will benefit your skin. You need to choose the right one for you! So how do you choose wisely? Here are 7 tips to help you protect your skin properly this summer.

1. Sunscreen for Dry Skin

People with dry skin experience skin tightness, flaking, and often fine wrinkles. The great thing is that sunscreen can protect against these issues, depending on its ingredients. You need a moisturizing sunscreen enriched with ingredients like shea butter or glycerin to combat skin dryness. You can also consider sunscreens containing hyaluronic acid – a compound naturally present in the skin that helps retain water. However, remember that this ingredient works best when combined with other moisturizing products that lock in the moisture.

2. Sunscreen for Oily or Acne-Prone Skin

Your problem is clogged pores and an unflattering shine on your skin, so the right sunscreen for you is an oil-free one enriched with moisture, especially one containing niacinamide, ceramides, and peptides. In particular, niacinamide (vitamin B3) helps prevent acne and the discoloration it causes on the skin. Ceramides and peptides are ingredients that make the product anti-aging and protect your skin from sun damage.

3. Sunscreen for Sensitive Skin

Sunscreen products can contain a variety of ingredients, some of which aren’t really necessary for skin protection. In general, if you have sensitive skin, it’s recommended to use a mineral (physical) sunscreen with titanium dioxide or zinc oxide, which is much less likely to cause an adverse reaction on the skin. It’s also advisable to avoid sunscreens with added fragrances, as the chemicals responsible for scents are unnecessary for the skin and may irritate it. If you use sunscreen daily, it’s also recommended to choose one with SPF 30 and not higher.

4. Sunscreen for Babies

It’s recommended not to expose a baby under 6 months to direct sunlight, but it’s still advisable and possible to protect their skin from sun damage by applying a small amount of sunscreen with SPF 30-50. Preferably, it should be a mineral sunscreen – one that contains titanium dioxide or zinc oxide. Just as these ingredients are recommended for those with sensitive skin, they are also suitable for a baby’s delicate skin.

5. Sunscreen for Use on Different Body Areas

Are you going to the beach and planning to expose your entire body to the sun? Or perhaps you’re just stepping out for errands and want to protect your face? Here, too, you need to use the right product. To protect only your face, use a cream, gel, or sticks around the eyes. For body protection, it’s better to use a spray. Just make sure it’s a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher.

6. Sunscreen for Hairy People

If you have a hairy chest or arms, you might struggle to reach the skin with a little cream, and on the other hand, too much cream will be visibly noticeable on the hair, which you might want to avoid. Therefore, in hairy areas, it’s recommended to avoid applying cream, and instead, you can use a protective gel or spray. Just make sure to thoroughly apply the spray to the skin beneath the hair and not rely on the spray reaching the skin on its own.

7. Sunscreen for People Who Sweat a Lot

On the packaging of the product, you’ll see certain words indicating its water resistance:

Water Resistant – Protects the skin for 40 minutes of water exposure

Water Proof – Protects the skin for 80 minutes of water exposure

This rule doesn’t only apply to being in water. Those who sweat a lot essentially wet the sunscreen on their body, and to enjoy prolonged skin protection for as long as possible, it’s recommended to choose Water Proof products. It’s also preferable to choose a cream over a spray.
