Born in Bulgaria in 1937, Christo Vladimirov Javacheff left his homeland at age 20 and set off on a journey across Europe. He began his foray into the art world alongside his wife, Jeanne-Claude Denat de Guillebon, with a piece titled “Iron Curtain”. This piece consisted of 240 barrels blocking an alley, created as a poetic response to the Berlin Wall. This was the first of many incredible art projects imagined by this incredible duo, based on sketches made by Christo. The couple continued to produce pieces under the name “Christo” before later on taking up the name “Christo and Jeanne-Claude”.
The work of Christo and his wife have been gorgeous large scale projects that often involve wrapping different architectural marvels of the world in various fabrics or building structures using unique materials, like “The Gates” in Central Park, made entirely from nylon fabric. On June 1, 2020, the world said good-bye to this incredible talent, 11 years after the passing of his wife. His contribution to the development and promotion of unique, unconventional, and truly out-of-the-box art cannot and will not be forgotten so long as his wondrous works continue to stand. Christo’s art pieces, like the ones collected below, are spread far and wide across the planet, and their sheer scale will astound and, hopefully, inspire you!
