1. Close-Up of The Rape of Prosperina, Gian Lorenzo Bernini
This large Baroque marble sculpture was created by Gian Lorenzo Bernini between 1621 and 1622. Bernini was only 23 years old at its completion. The sculpture depicts the abduction of Prosperina, whereby she was seized and taken to the underworld by the god, Pluto.
2. Amore e Psiche, Antonio Canova
Located in the Louvre, this sculpture is also named, Psyche Revived by Cupid's Kiss. It is regarded as a masterpiece of Neoclassical sculpture and depicts mythological lovers at a moment of great emotion.
3. A Veiled Vestal Virgin, Raffaelle Monthi
This sculpture was completed in 1847 and was inspired by the priestesses of Vesta, goddess of the hearth in ancient Rome.
4. A detailed look into Ugolino and His Sons, Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux
This sculpture was inspired by Count Ugolino della Gherardesca (c.1220-1289). The count was an Italian nobleman, politician and naval commander. Ugolino and His Sons was sculpted by Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux in 1861 and can be found in Petit Palais.
5. Close up of the Pietà, Michelangelo
Housed in St Peter's Basilica, Vatican City, the sculpture in Carrara marble, was originally made for the cardinal's funeral monument, however was later moved to its current location. It is the only piece Michelangelo ever signed.
6. Modesty, Antonio Corradini
This sculpture is a sepulchral monumentto of the mother of Prince Raimondo who gave him life by sacrificing her own. This marble sculpture, completed in 1752, can be found in the Cappella Sansevero in Naples.
7. A marble tomb sculpture
This incredibly detailed work of art can be found in the monumental cemetery of Staglieno, located on a hillside in Genoa, Italy. The sculptures located in the cemetery were executed by prominent Italian artisans of the 19th century, including Santo Varni and Giulio Monteverde.
8. The Despair, Jean-Joseph Perraud
This detailed and vivid sculpture is intended to be an allegory of the tragic condition of human existence. It can be admired at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.
