How to Unclog a Toilet

Maintaining the toilet is probably one of the most disgusting household chores. So, whether you're fixing the toilet or just giving it a weekly clean, it is most likely the least favorable of all of your chores. But, there is something worse - a clogged toilet. Even worse, a clogged toilet when you don't have a plunger on hand. As terrible as it may be to imagine, it is actually quite easily fixed.

So, if you're faced with a clogged toilet and you don't have a plunger, or if you don't want to use a plunger, this trick brought to you by Brit and Build TV will help (see the video below). While it's not guaranteed to work every time, people have written in saying it's worked for them on numerous occasions. The instructions below will help you get rid of a very large wad of paper towels.

To get things running smoothly again you will need liquid dish soap. Here's what you need to do:

1. Pour a large amount of liquid soap into your toilet bowl - about half a cup. The soap is denser and heavier than the water and should, therefore, drop to the bottom of the bowl.
2. Let the liquid dish soap sit in the bowl for 20 to 30 minutes. What should happen is that the soap will seep into the clog lubricating the trap way.
3. After about 20 minutes fill up a container with hot water and pour it into the bowl making sure not to overflow the toilet bowl. The clog should slowly work it's way free.
4. The entire time for the project takes about a half hour and that includes the aforementioned 20 minutes. This means that the physical work should require about 10 minutes.

While it does not work for all clogs, people have reported success by repeating steps 1-3 again if it doesn't work the first time. Some have said they did this at night and the clog was gone in the morning. Watch how it is done in the video below:
