It's a difficult task, that of a historical screenplay writer. Not only must they construct a complete picture from the spotty information we have of famous historical events and ages, not only must they try to incorporate that real information, but they must also construct a story we as an audience would enjoy watching. From the many bad historical movies out there, we know this is a hard task indeed.
But when done right, mixing fantasy and real events into a fascinating tapestry, we get classic movies like Amadeus, Dances With Wolves or Saving Private Ryan.
