Henri Emile Benoit Matisse, better known as Henri Matisse, was a French draughtsman, sculptor, printmaker, and painter. He was born in 1869 in a commune called Le Cateau-Cambrésis, located in the Nord department of France. He first began to dabble in painting when he was 20, working with supplies purchased by his mother. He found solace in painting that he would later describe as "a kind of paradise". After 2 years of playing with paints, Matisse went to Paris to study art.

For over a decade, Matisse continued to expand his network of artist friends and his portfolio, trying out different styles like Fauvism and using bold colors. It was at the start of the 20th century that Matisse met Pablo Picasso, a younger artist who would come to rise in the ranks with him and become his lifelong friend and artistic rival. Matisse perfected his craft over the decades, adding print-making, sculpting, and architectural design to his list of achievements.
This great artist passed away at the age of 84, leaving his imprint behind on over a thousand works of art, each more beautiful than the last. Here are some of the most magnificent masterpieces left behind by this expert artist.
