How many times have you found yourself needing a spare key in an emergency, but there wasn’t one available? Whether you forgot to duplicate your keys or simply did not think you would ever need another one, the next trick will help you prepare yourself if you ever find yourself in such a sticky situation.
Plus, you won’t need to buy any special equipment or materials because everything you need is probably already in your home. Just gather all your important keys and learn how to make a spare key so that you’re never left out in the cold again!

1. Take the original key and hold it over the lighter flame until it is black. Tongs can be used to avoid the risk of burning yourself.

2. Tape a small layer of adhesive tape onto the key, press them tightly together and then peel off the adhesive tape. A mark of the original key will remain on the tape.

3. Take a simple tin food can and remove its lid.
4. Tape the adhesive tape with the key mark on the tin can lid.
5. Cut the lid of the tin can with the scissors according to the shape of the key. Make sure to keep a circle for grip and be careful not to cut yourself on the edge of the lid.

6. You can now use the spare key you made to unlock the lock. It is not intended for permanent use, but it can be an excellent substitute in emergencies. Keep the key as close as possible to the lock and do not turn it too tightly to keep the metal from curling.
