Polar bears' natural habitat is widely known to be the Arctic - the northernmost part of the globe. They're fully wild animals. That is exactly what makes the photo series featured in this post so unique. Russian photographer Dmitry Kokh managed to capture Polar Bears at an abandoned weather station on Kolyuchin Island in the Chukchi Sea. This sea is located between eastern Russia and Alaska.
The photograph above was featured in a competition held by a magazine called "Russia's Wildlife." It perfectly depicts the relations between wildlife and man-made environments, particularly abandoned ones that are reclaimed by nature.
This weather station opened in 1934, only to be abandoned in 1992. How did he manage to produce these photos? Funnily enough, he set out on an expedition to capture polar bears, as they are a special interest of his. But he didn't expect to see any until he reached Wrangel Island, located in the north of the Chukchi Sea. This island is home to many polar bears, so the chances of finding one are high. The polar bears didn't keep Kokh waiting...
In my opinion, what makes this photo series truly remarkable is how calm the bears look. Time froze at the weather station back in 1992, the day it was abandoned for good. It seemingly fell out of time. The bears seem at ease in front of Kokh's camera lens, almost as if they had lived in this hut their entire lives.
