Michelangelo Buonarroti was not only one of the most renowned Renaissance artists - whose paintings like the Sistine Chapel changed the face of art forever - but he was also an architect, a poet, and a sculptor. His famous statue David was originally commissioned as one in a series of sculptures depicting various prophets. However, this masterpiece was so magnificent, it was instead displayed in a public square in Florence, in front of the seat of the civic government. The statue is now held as the prize of the Florence art world, in the Galleria dell'Accademia. David is only one of innumerable stunning sculptures created by Michelangelo.
