On a surface level, some things around us can seem mundane and even boring. But every establishment, object, and person, as ordinary as they may appear, has a history that might just be fascinating. All it takes to make the world around us much more interesting is learning a few new facts every day. And this is exactly what we want to present you with today.

The facts below cover an array of different topics, from Winston Churchill to the origin story of whiteout. Some of these seemingly random facts are so interesting, you won’t be able to help but pass them on!

1. The most popular item at Walmart is bananas. They sell more bananas than any other single item they carry.

2. Eton College, one of the most expensive private schools in Britain, was originally founded to provide free education to poor boys.

3. Winston Churchill is an honorary citizen of the United States. He was the first to be awarded this title posthumously.

4. In Lichtenstein's last military engagement in 1866, none of its 80 soldiers were killed. In fact, 81 returned, including one new Italian friend. The army was disbanded soon afterward.

8. Steve Sasson, an engineer at Kodak, invented the first digital camera in 1975. However, the company didn't pursue his idea because manufacturing film was their big moneymaker.

9. Sweden's Northernmost town, Kiruna, has a population of 23,000 people. The town is being relocated 3 km (2 miles) to avoid being swallowed by the world's largest iron-ore mine.

10. People in the Medieval Ages didn't actually believe the Earth was flat. It's a myth created during the evolution debate of the late 1800s.

11. The word 'pumpernickel' literally translates to "Devil's fart." Originating in Germany, the bread was named that due to the digestive problems many people had experienced after eating it.

12. Many old movie theaters had 'cry rooms' one could take their children to if they were becoming disruptive. This way, the parents could still enjoy the movie while not disturbing the other audience members.

13. The poem Twas the Night Before Christmas is largely responsible for the conception of Santa Claus. The movie also had a massive impact on the history of Christmas gift-giving.

14. Females of the octopus species Graneledone boreopacifica carry their eggs for 53 months. During this time, they don't eat, and they perish at the end of the pregnancy. This brooding period is the longest known for any animal.

15. Whiteout, originally knows as 'mistake out,' was invented by Bette Nesmith Graham in 1951. Working as a typist, she often made mistakes and developed a white tempera paint using her kitchen and garage as a laboratory.
