Do you like swimming pools? How about a swimming pool you can actually bring a sail boat to? The world's largest swimming pool is located at the San Alfonso del Mar resort in Algarrobo, Chile. It is 1,013 (3,324 ft) long, and covers a total area of 8 hectares (19.77 acres). It contains a huge amount of water, no less than 250 million liters (or 66 million gallons) of water which is the equivalent of about 6,000 pools of 8 meters long. This is a major tourist avenue and a popular resort for Chileans and world travelers alike. |

Why build a huge swimming pool next to the ocean? The reason, unfortunately, is that the waters of the Chilean coast are dangerous to swim in, are very cold and unwelcoming to swimmers. Swimming is actually not allowed in the area, and so it became a land that is hard to develop into a tourist attraction. After all, what good is a beach without an ocean to swim in? A Mr. Fischmann answered this problem, with an interesting solution: He dreamed of a huge watery environment where people could swim and enjoy playing water sports. Somewhere clean, warm and safe. |

Mr. Fischmann, a biochemist by training, came up with a patent that has allowed a way for lagoons of this size to be built at a minor comparative cost. His invention filters water from the sea, warms it up by 9c degrees, and keeps the water crystal clear. His new company is called Crystal Lagoons Technology. |

The cost? About $400,000 per hectare (or $160,000 per acre) for a standard 5 hectare (12 acre) lagoon, and maintenance costs of about $4,000 per hectar ($1,600 per acre) a month. |
